Canon 600D vs. Canon 60D: Which one should you buy?

By Charlie Spencer

There have been many debates over the new Canon T3i since its release in February, 2011. Many critics claim that there is no big difference between the Canon 600D (T3i) and the Canon 60D. The two cameras are similar from many points of view but also very different. Both cameras have the 18.0 Megapixel CMOS sensor which ensures the same high quality of the pictures. The cameras offer the same quality for the videos too since they have the same video settings and the same motion options. The LCD screen which took everyone by surprise on the Canon 60D is now part of the 600D as well. The differences, however, are considerable, particularly if you are a professional photographer. Here they are:

The number of frames per second is different for the two cameras. The Canon 600D can shoot 3.7 frames/second whereas the Canon 60D 5.3 frames/second. This may not seem important but if you are a sports photographer or you simply enjoy capturing motion, the Canon 60D is definitely a better choice.

The viewfinder at the Canon 60D is 0,59x while the one at Canon T3i is only 0,53x. Moreover, the viewfinder coverage on the Canon 60 D is of 96%, whereas the viewfinder coverage for the Canon 600D is of 95%. This is a big plus for the Canon 60D, meaning the pictures will be brighter and larger because of the bigger viewfinder coverage.

Another difference between the two cameras is related to the out of focus system. The 60D has 9 cross-type focus points, whereas the T3i has only 1. Professional photographers might find this very important.

The shutter speed represents another big difference between the two cameras. The Canon 600D has 1/4000s while the Canon 60D has 1/8000s in shutter speed. Therefore, the 60D is better when you are using the flash or you shoot in full-of-light locations.

Concerning the battery life, with a 60D you can take about 1100 shots while the Canon 600D only offers you the possibility of 550.

Regarding the size and the weight, the Canon 600D is a bit smaller and lighter than the Canon 60D. This might be important but if you carry the camera with you all day long.

The last big difference between the two is the price. The Canon T3i is much cheaper than the Canon 60D. In conclusion, the weight, the price and the size of the Canon 600D might make you decide upon it. But you should not forget that for some extra hundreds of dollars you can have a camera with a better viewfinder, shutter speed, more frames/second, a better focus system and a longer battery life.
