Choosing The Best Webcam Best Now

By Joel R. Skachtua

There is hardly a computer user today who wouldn't reap the benefit of having a webcam. Most new computers sold in the last few years include them. They've become an accepted piece of equipment. External webcams can be purchased by people who want to upgrade from their built-in unit, or those who don't have a webcam at all.

The most important determining factor is how you will be using the camera. For home use to keep in touch with family and friends, the most basic camera will probably suffice. If you want to take still photos, you may need a sharper image. For business video conferencing, a high quality broadcast is preferred.

You will see cams that are marketed for desktops and for laptops. Depending on what you plan to use it for, either one may be better for you, whatever kind of computer you have. The differences are in size and mobility. Cameras for the laptop usually clip or stick to the top of the screen. They are also very small. Webcams for desktops are larger and can be moved around. Prices range from 10 dollars to 300 or more. A camera between 20 and 40 dollars is enough for most home uses.

The first cameras for the computer, in the 1990s, had choppy transmission and poor quality images. Modern cameras, thanks to the higher frame rate, are much smoother. Look for a camera with 30 frames per second (fps). Even 15 fps will give you a pretty good image. If you need high definition, you can get that, too, with 1.3 megapixel video, or more.

You will see plastic lenses and glass lenses. Glass is better, because the lighting and sharpness of the image will be better. The plastic is perfectly adequate, though, especially if you are only doing video chatting.

Many people are now choosing to use video chat instead of their home telephones for talking to friends and family. Websites that offer the service for free or a low cost are proliferating. Built in microphones, therefore, are pretty much standard on new computer cameras. Check the specifications to be sure.

For those who want something a bit more from their cams, there are some extra features that can be found. One is the ability to use the camera away from the computer to record images onto a built-in memory chip, or onto removable memory media. A motion detector allows it to double as a security camera. Some allow you to add special effects to your videos right at the camera. You can also get software that can be used to do these things with a basic webcam.

Almost everyone can find a use for one of these. If you like posting videos online, a webcam makes uploading a snap. Webcams make chatting more fun. Every business should have one for remote meetings and broadcasting among far-flung locations. Now you know what to look for when you are shopping for the right webcam for you.
