The name Protar was given to the first really modern version which was able to be adjusted for wide angles. This was invented in eighteen ninety by Paul Rudolph. Most professional telephoto types are still manufactured following this formula. Later, the Cooke Triplet became the economy version in eighteen ninety-three and was used in one of the most popular cameras of all time known as the Argus C3.
Due to a lack of overall excitement with the Protar, Paul Rudolph then invented the Tessar. The Tessar was actually quite similar to the Cooke Triplet and in nineteen thirty was perfected. This lens can be found in almost all of the popular camera models of this time period.
Once the initial problems seemed to have been mastered it became important to capture the photo with only the existing light available. In nineteen twenty-three, Ernemann Ernostar began working on low-light photography issues and came up with a Cooke Triplet type known as the Ernostar. This became the first lens that was usable for available light photography which changed everything. Advancements to this particular item continued under the name Sonnar.
The first fish-eye lens was invented with the name Beck Hill Sky in nineteen twenty-three. While the name is strange the reason behind it is clear because it is meant to give the view of a fish peering out of water and looking up toward the heavens. The image is to be a three hundred and sixty degree barrel that would allow for studies to be done on the clouds.
Most people are somewhat familiar with macro photography which can range from almost life-size to approximately ten to twenty times that size. Some of the most interesting photographs that have ever been taken have been done with this type of lens. Heinz Kilfitt invented the Makro-Kilar which was a Tessar mount in nineteen fifty-five. It was not until the nineteen seventies that the macro zoom began being used.
While one of the most popular of any available, the early zoom unfortunately did not produce high quality images. It was not until nineteen seventy-four that the first professional quality Ponder and Best Vivitar Series macro zoom was produced and available to the public. The zoom lens continues to inspire improvement in other developments of regular lenses of the future. Of course the best development of all was that which allowed everyone to become a photographer and begin using auto-focus camera lenses.
